What makes a podcast successful?

Devising a successful podcast requires time, effort and dedication. We are going to look at 4 key components to a successful podcast.

  1. Downloadability.

Regular consistent downloads are the makings of a successful podcast, so this should be something that you bear in mind. As mentioned previously in earlier blog posts, making your content easy to download is so essential, because it will put the content consumer at ease and your content will be more attractive and engaging, as a result. We, therefore, advise as a general rule of thumb that podcast episodes should last no longer than 30 minutes, because this is the average attention span of content consumers and it takes on average only 2 minutes or less to download a 30 minute episode. Downloadability also depends on who is hosting your podcast, and the internet speed, but ensuring that your episodes are not too lengthy, will go a long way.

 2. Consistent consumer engagement.

Consumer engagement is often neglected by content creators. Platforms such as YouTube, enable content consumers to interact with content creators, via, the comment section. With podcasting, however, it is slightly difficult. Nonetheless, consumer engagement is very important in this process. Communicating with your listeners ensures that your podcast is seen as relevant, thoughtful and open. We mentioned that live radio shows are able to do this easily, however it is not impossible for podcasters to reach out. You can ask listeners to send emails, contribute to discussions via tweets or Facebook messaging and so on. Doing this will also give you an idea of what topics are popular, engaging and which ones are not. 

 3. A consistent stream of content.

It may seem obvious, but a consistent stream of content is key. In our workshop, we explore methods, which you can use to create consistent content in a short time frame, but we advise you to ensure that the episodes, which you are creating are sequential, methodical and organized. 

 4. Engaging, relevant topics.

We also analyze this in great detail in our workshop, but try and make sure that your content is as relevant to the popular culture as much as possible. Your podcast should come across as observant, perceptive and modern, so that you can attract as many people as possible.  

In conclusion, a successful podcast relies on ensuring that the episodes are easy to download, and can keep the average attention span, making sure that you consistently maintain open communication with your listeners and making your content as interesting as possible!
