In this blog post, we look at the role of YouTube in self expression!
The great thing about being a content creator, is that it is the most common way for people to express themselves. More and more people are using YouTube to state their political views, share their opinions on popular culture and talk about their unique life experiences.
Specifically with YouTube, you can find various channels, which explore the ways in which men express themselves in a feminine way, for example, whether it is through make up, or clothing.
There are countless YouTube channels, which centre around men wearing makeup, such as Patrick Starr and Manny MUA, who both have over 9 million subscribers. They also use their platform to talk about their unique experiences as members of the LGBTQ community, as their content is likely to resonate with members of the LGBTQ community.
We also find that YouTube can help to further represent people from marginalised groups, such as Dina Tokio, who herself has well over 700,000 subscribers. She regularly uploads videos, which deal with her experiences as a modern British Muslim.
This, therefore, means that it is easier for people, who may have come from underrepresented groups, to start a YouTube channel. If, for example, Patrick Starr, who is a person of colour, as well as a member of the LGBTQ community can find success as a content creator, it can also give other LGBTQ individuals of colour the confidence to express themselves, through YouTube, since Patrick Starr is an example of a success story. Patrick Starr himself has launched a make-up line with Sephora, following on from his successful career as a YouTuber.
In conclusion, YouTube can be a way for people, specifically from marginalised groups to confidently express their identity, beliefs and individuality, because of the growing popularity and even acceptance of content from individuals, who come from these same groups.
